I was driving home from work later than usual, the kind of late where the roads feel empty and every shadow looks like it’s waiting for you.
The trees along the road were black against the headlights, and a thin fog hung low over the pavement. I had the radio down, one hand on the wheel, just thinking about getting home.
Then something moved near the shoulder.
At first, I thought it was a deer. That’s what your mind wants it to be when you’re alone on a dark Wisconsin road. But then it stepped into the edge of my headlights, and my foot came off the gas.
It wasn’t a deer.
It was standing on two legs.
The thing was huge, taller than any man I’d ever seen, with a thick, hunched body covered in dark, matted fur. Its arms hung too long at its sides, ending in hands that looked almost human, except for the claws. Its head was shaped like a wolf’s, but wider, heavier, more wrong.
Then it turned and looked right at me.
The eyes caught my headlights and flashed like two burning coins in the dark.
For a few seconds, neither of us moved. I could hear my engine idling. I could hear my own breathing. The road ahead was empty except for that thing, standing half in the lane like it had been waiting there.
Then it dropped down on all fours.
Not like an animal.
Like something pretending to be one.
It moved fast, crossing the road in a blur of fur and muscle, disappearing into the trees on the other side. The branches shook once, hard, and then everything went still.
I sat there with both hands locked on the wheel, staring into the darkness where it had vanished.
I wanted to tell myself it was a bear. A big dog. A trick of the fog.
But I know what I saw.
And whatever crossed that road that night wasn’t supposed to exist.
