In 1988, I lay on my bunk bed, top bunk. It was summer because the sun was still setting but I had to be in bed. I was a small child. There was a thunderstorm I had been watching. I was IN NO WAY near being asleep. Then, there he was, towering to the ceiling near the foot of my bed. His red eyes made sure I knew I was about to die and that I could do nothing about it. I tried to scream, tried to move, nothing. Not sleep paralysis, this was something different. After a few moments he was gone, huge black form of fedora and long coat, vanished as if never there. Once I could cry I was inconsolable and I did not sleep until much later that night. Most of my life I thought I was the only person to ever see him. Later, as an adult, my mom said she had seen one in daylight with long fingers and told me not to feed him with any thoughts or mentions, “don’t lure him”, as it were. Then came the internet. Now I know I am not the only one.
